Casino association warns of further closures
7th May, 2008
The British Casino Association (BCA) has said that more casinos look set to close unless the government makes concessions to the industry.
Seven UK casino gambling venues have been forced to shut down in recent months, with experts blaming the smoking ban as well as the implementation of the 2005 Gambling Act.
Tightened tax regimes and limits on admission numbers are also believed to have had a negative impact on numbers - the combined effect of which the BCA has likened to a campaign against casinos.
"Unless we work with the government to ameliorate these effects, the closures are going to continue," was the stark warning given by Lady Cobham, chairman of the BCA.
With earlier plans for a series of supercasinos now scrapped, pundits have even suggested that Gordon Brown's proposed 16 regional casino licences could exacerbate the problem.
If any such facilities are developed near to existing casinos, it has been suggested that they will drive many established operators out of business.
